dear bird cd

publicity information

The chapbook and CD, "Dear Bird," features the work of poet Sheila Packa and improvisional cello by Kathy McTavish. Marcie Wood, visual artist from Grand Marais, Minnesota did the cover art. The CD features the collaboration of both poet and cellist. Many of the poems have been performed in the multi media artist & writers collaborative, Café au Lake. These particular poems focus on healing, the rivers and northern Minnesota woods, Lake Superior, and of course, birds.

Sheila Packa grew up on the Iron Range, is the granddaughter of Finnish immigrants, and lives in Duluth. She has an MFA in Creative Writing and is an adjunct teacher at Lake Superior College. She has published poems, short stories, and essays in many literary magazines and anthologies. Most recently, her work has been featured in New Rivers Press book, To Sing Along the Way: Minnesota Women Poets from Pre-Territorial Days to the Present, edited by Joyce Sutphen, Thom Tammaro, and Connie Wanek. She's received two Arrowhead Regional Arts Council fellowships for poetry and two Loft McKnight Awards.

Kathy McTavish plays improvisional cello. Her music ranges from spare, bluesy minimalism to dense, full-bodied landscapes. She blends a distinct acoustic sound with looping technology to create live, multi-dimensional sound spaces.

The cover artist of both the CD and chapbook is Marcie Wood who lives in Grand Marais. Her paintings are currently on exhibit at Lizzard's Gallery and other places.

Kathy McTavish, Sheila Packa and Marcie Wood have been part of the arts performance group called Cafe au Lake. Cafe au Lake, under the artistic direction of Marilyn Mayry, features multi-media performances in various venues of music, dance, poetry, and visual art and have done previous events such as "The Green Side of the Moon," "Second Story," and "Split at the Root."

The chaboook/CD is available at local bookstores & galleries. It is currently being sold through The Bookstore at Fitgers, Northern Lights Bookstore, Lizzards Art Gallery, Sunhillow Books, and the Depot Gift Shop as well as through the individual artists. You can purchase it online below.
